Timeless jewels: how to care for them, what to know, and what to drop from your routine

A piece of jewelry is not just an object. Gold, silver, and platinum are alloyed with other metals, and gemstones, especially natural ones, react to heat, sudden temperature changes, and the chemicals routinely used during their creation.

Precious metal and natural gemstone jewelry is sensitive to all of these environmental changes, which is why at Joyería Suiza we recommend a few simple habits so that every piece is cared for properly.

The habits that make the difference in keeping your jewelry looking like new

  • Put your jewelry on last. Perfumes, creams, hairsprays, and cosmetics can dull color and shine. It is best to wait until fragrances and cosmetics have dried completely before putting on your jewelry, or simply put it on once the product is fully dry, just before leaving the house.

  • Take it off before doing anything active. Household cleaning products, sea water during the summer and regular soap are all known enemies of fine jewelry. Similarly, physical activity can cause your jewelry to lose quality over time.

  • Store pieces separately. Jewelry scratches other jewelry. The best option is to keep each piece in its original case or an individual pouch, away from humidity and direct sunlight. Chains should be closed and laid flat so they don't tangle, or stored in a jewelry box for long necklaces, where they won't knot in ways that are impossible to undo.

  • Clean them with common sense. Lukewarm water, a neutral soap, and a very soft brush are enough for most gold pieces. Afterward, dry them with a soft cloth so you don't alter the shine or composition of your favorite piece.

  • Have them checked once a year. A trusted jeweler should inspect settings and clasps once a year. Daily wear tends to loosen them without warning, and a worn clasp can cause a piece to be lost, or simply wear down little by little.

Myths to leave behind if you want to care for your jewelry properly

We have often heard different claims about how a fine piece should be cared for. But not all of those recommendations are true.

  • 'Gold never tarnishes'. Pure gold barely reacts, but 18-karat jewelry contains other metals in its alloy, and contact with chemicals or cosmetics can dull its color over time.

  • 'Diamonds are indestructible'. They are the hardest mineral, but not the most resistant: a strong blow can chip them or loosen their setting, leaving the diamond without its particular brilliance.

  • 'Lemon or vinegar brings back the shine'. Acids can damage pearls and porous stones. The same goes for toothpaste, which is abrasive and can mark metal.

  • 'An ultrasonic cleaner works for everything'. It is a useful tool for some pieces, but it can damage pearls, opals, and stones with fractures. When in doubt, go to a professional.

  • 'Sleeping in your jewelry does no harm'. Constant friction wears down clasps and chains and tangles them, so sleeping in your favorite pieces can cause them to lose their charm.

One last piece of advice: the best jewelry is the kind that's cared for naturally. A simple daily gesture and a visit once a year are enough to ensure a piece lasts for generations. That's why at Swiss Jewelry, we take care to ensure your jewelry stays pristine for much longer.
