How to choose your first automatic watch: the essentials to know before you decide

It runs without a battery, powered by the energy of the person wearing it. We tell you what to expect from an automatic, how to get the size right, and which Certina models make a good starting point

How to choose your first automatic watch: the essentials to know before you decide

An automatic watch has no battery. Inside, a rotor harnesses every movement of the wrist to wind the mainspring that drives the entire mechanism. It is a small object that beats to the rhythm of the person wearing it, which is why it deserves to be understood before you choose the first piece of your collection.

What to know before you buy

An automatic does not work like a quartz watch. If you leave it unworn for a few days, it stops, and it may gain or lose a few seconds a day. This is to be expected in a mechanical movement, not a defect.

For that reason, plan for maintenance as well. Like any precision mechanism, it needs periodic servicing at an official service centre. Well cared for, it is designed to last for decades.

Getting the size and model right

Photographs can be deceiving, so always try it on your wrist. Look at the diameter and thickness, but above all at the lug-to-lug distance: it determines whether the case sits well or overhangs.

To start, a versatile piece is best. A diver such as the Certina DS Action Diver 38 mm Powermatic 80 moves from the office to the beach without changing straps.

If you travel often, the Certina DS Action GMT Powermatic 80 adds a second time zone. And once you know what you like, the chronograph may be tempting. Note, however, that not all chronographs work the same way: the Certina DS Action Chrono 42 mm, in titanium with a blue dial and sapphire crystal, is quartz. Its accuracy is very stable, and it needs no winding or movement to keep time. It is a different option from an automatic, which is why it is worth understanding the difference before you choose.

The movement does the work

When comparing two watches, ask about the movement: how much power reserve it offers, whether it is in-house or based on a proven reliable calibre, and whether it carries a precision certification. The Powermatic 80 calibre, found in much of the Certina collection, offers a generous power reserve that you will appreciate if you do not wear the watch every day.

New or pre-owned

For a new piece, an official dealer guarantees authenticity, warranty, and a service team that knows the watch inside out. If you prefer a watch with a history, our pre-owned catalogue can open the door to a model of higher standing or to a reference that is no longer produced. Just make sure it comes with its box, documentation, and service history, as we select and check them for our Suiza Heritage collection.

The best first watch

There are plenty of lists and trends, but the rule is simple: the best first automatic is the one you feel like wearing every morning. One day you will find yourself looking at it without thinking about the time, and then you will know it is yours. Visit our boutique in Vigo, try it on calmly, and let your wrist make the decision.
