Wedding guest and bridal jewellery: how to choose between white gold and yellow gold to suit your dress, at Joyería Suiza

First comes the invitation, then the dress. And then the usual question: which jewellery to wear. Here we explain how to choose the right metal for the colour of your dress, and which pieces to choose for the most important day of your life

Wedding guest and bridal jewellery: how to choose between white gold and yellow gold to suit your dress, at Joyería Suiza

Jewellery is never chosen on its own: choose it with the dress in front of you. It sounds obvious, but it is the step most often forgotten. The dress is chosen months in advance, the shoes, bag and hairstyle are all planned, and the jewellery is left until the final week. Yet that is exactly when a well-chosen pair of earrings can change the whole look.

At the Joyería Suiza boutique we see it at every wedding, winter or spring: the best clue is rarely in the jewellery box. It is in the colour of the fabric.

Guests in cool tones: white gold as your ally

If your dress is midnight blue, pearl grey, lavender, aqua or black, white gold is the ideal companion. It extends the cool sheen of the fabric and brings light to the face, which really shows at afternoon and evening weddings.

A piece of advice we often give: if your dress is plain and matte, allow yourself earrings with movement. If it already shines on its own, as satin or sequins do, choose a more graphic piece and keep the rest to a minimum.

Our selection. Damiani's Margherita earrings form a flower of 0.51 ct of diamonds set in 18K white gold. To complete the look, the same collection includes a pendant and a bracelet. For a more contemporary feel, the newly arrived Renaissance XL earrings by Le Carre pair diamond bars with a pointed drop that lengthens the neck. And from our own collection, the long white gold earrings with crystal have become one of our favourites.

Guests in warm tones: yellow gold that adds warmth

Red, coral, terracotta, mustard, olive green or chocolate. With these colours, yellow gold does not compete with the dress: it warms it. It also works over black when you want a stronger contrast.

Here texture matters as much as the metal. An irregularly shaped gold leaf or a cascade of small spheres catches the light differently from pavé, so you can wear two pieces together without the look becoming overloaded.

Our selection. Marco Bicego's Lunaria earrings are irregularly shaped leaves in 18K yellow gold. Nanis's Élite Soffio earrings fall long and light with 0.49 ct of diamonds, and Roberto Coin's Desert Flower earrings have just arrived with 0.47 ct of diamonds. On the wrist, try the Basic bracelet by K di Kuore or the Daily Top Riviere by Le Carre, a fine line of 1.33 ct of diamonds that you can wear alone or paired with another piece.

Brides in a simple dress: let one piece take centre stage

Crêpe, plain silk, a clean neckline. When the dress has no embellishment, the jewellery becomes the centre of attention. This is the moment for long earrings or a pendant that makes itself noticed.

Just remember: only one star. If the earrings are long, leave the neck bare; if the pendant leads, keep the earrings to a subtler point of light.

Our selection. From our own collection, the long Elizabethan-style earrings with brilliant-cut diamonds, inspired by antique jewellery, or the five wave-shaped bar earrings with 0.68 ct of bezel-set diamonds, both in white gold. If you prefer yellow gold, Roberto Coin's Jasmine pendant holds a pearl at the heart of its flower. And for the hand that does not wear the wedding ring, a band ring with pavé-set brilliant-cut diamonds.

Brides in a dress with volume: jewellery that complements

A ball-gown skirt, lace, embroidery, long sleeves or a high neck. When the dress already says it all, the jewellery needs to give it room: small earrings that sit close to the ear, fine bracelets and details that reveal themselves up close.

Pearl and ivory lace go together beautifully. And a small diamond rosette is all it takes to light up the face in photographs.

Our selection. Roberto Coin's Jasmine earrings combine pearl and yellow gold in a small flower, while Le Carre's Daily Diamonds Roseta earrings are a diamond rosette weighing just 1.62 g. Both have just arrived at the boutique. If you prefer white gold, choose our earrings with 0.90 ct of brilliant-cut diamonds. And on the wrist, Roberto Coin's Princess Flower bracelet, fine and adjustable.

One last tip: bring your dress to the boutique

Or at least a photo or a swatch of the fabric. At our boutique at Venezuela 49 in Vigo, we will help you try the pieces against the real colour of your dress, which is where the decision is truly made. The right piece of jewellery is the one that looks made for that dress.
